This months meeting was so big that we had to move locations to Highway Pizza.  Regardless, we had a great time, had lots of pizza, and got a lot accomplished.

Membership forms are now due.  A list will be turned into the various sponsors within 2 weeks, and only dues paying members will be able to access discounts.  In an effort to promote and reward club activity, benefits will be tiered.  More information can be found in the Athlete Requirements and Benefits form.  Athletes are also asked to keep us informed of your group activities and race results, and we hope to have an online line form for this shortly.

We have recently moved website hosts to PowWeb. More info on PowWeb. In the coming months, there should be some neat additions.

Pictures needed for website and sponsor applications.  Please send to Shawn ASAP

We are in discussion with several sponsors, which will be announced at the January meeting.

16 November 2006 Meeting Notes

The Fall clothing order deadline has passed.

Please start thinking ahead to the next club meeting - scheduled for December 21. There will be discussion of sponsorships and some planning for next year. Also, if you have any race results or photos of training and racing, especially in club uniform, please send them to centriclub@yahoo.com soon. That way the sponsors can see the people they've been helping and, we hope, continue supporting us in the future.

19 October 2006 Meeting Note

If you are interested in club clothing, please get the order forms by clicking here. Please send all orders and payment to the address on the forms. The deadline is approaching quickly.

17 August 2006 Meeting Note

The Penn State Triathlon Club will be hosting a sprint-distance triathlon at Whipple Dam State Park near State College on September 10. For more on the race, please see their race Web page. The CPR beginner ride on Sunday, Aug. 20 will meet at Whipple Dam to test ride the bike course.

Livestrong Fundraising Announcement - June 2006

New club member Mike Boyer is planning to participate in a cancer-research fundraiser ride on September 10 near Philadelphia. The event is run by Lance Armstrong's Livestrong organization. For more information on the event, please see the event Web site. There are rides of varying lengths that should be suitable for everyone from beginners to long-time endurance riders.

Mike has entered himself as the first member of a team for the event and would like to get as many Central Penn riders as possible to join the team and ride/raise funds toward a team goal. Please check out the team page by clicking here. A liability waiver for the event can be found by clicking here.

If you have questions about this event, please contact Mike at mdboyer74@msn.com.

18 May 2006 Meeting Points

1. Anthony Dinallo and Mark Dontigny will be serving as co-presidents, with Anthony as primary contact for club sponsors and Mark as race organizer/director (more on this in the next point). Shawn Johnson will be development coordinator and will continue to lead such efforts as club clothing ordering. Sparky Ion will be membership coordinator and will continue to deposit dues into the club account - and keep the updated club roster.

2. Mark Dontigny is leading an effort for CPR to host a fall cyclocross race in State College. Promoting a race would fulfill some of the club's obligations to USA Cycling, and it would be a great way to bring more positive attention to our group. Details are still being worked out. Expect update announcements via e-mail or at future meetings.

3. The Hollidaysburg Triathlon is scheduled for August 5. If you would be interested in being part of a relay team for this event, please watch the club e-mail list. Sarah Meyer-Chilenski will be helping to coordinate teams via the e-mail list.

Casual Clothing and Promotional Items Announcement 21 April 2006

If you would be interested in embroidered apparel - polo shirts or Dickies work shirts with the Central Penn Racing logo - please click HERE for an order form. The same form also has ordering information for club stickers/decals. All orders for these items are due May 1.

20 April 2006 Meeting Points

Please see the Workouts page for a revised list of workout times and locations.

Training/racing clothing orders are still scheduled to arrive the first week in May. Please keep watching the e-mail.

16 March 2006 Meeting Points

Club clothing orders have been placed. Thanks to all those who got their order forms in and came to the sizing "party." Special thanks to Shawn Johnson for handling the uniform design and ordering.

Finished clothing is expected to arrive around the first week of May. Please watch the e-mail list for updates.

Uniform Orders 16 February 2006

Below are links to the clothing order forms. Please fill out BOTH. DEADLINE IS MARCH 1. Forms are in Adobe's ".pdf" format:

USCF Announcement 25 January 2006

From club member Shawn Johnson:

Central Penn Racing is now a registered USA Cycling club! (This is in addition to the USA Triathlon group membership). For those looking for a USCF or NORBA license, please register with USA Cycling using "Central Penn Racing"; the club id # is 10862.

You can register online! Go to www.usacycling.org/myusac and create an account. Select your license needs (USCF, NORBA, and/or collegiate, and then look for "Central Penn Racing" between Central Kentucky Wheelmen and Central Washington Cycling. Input CC info, and viola!

* Be sure to print your receipt, both for your reference, and in case you race before your license comes to avoid "unattached" or "one day license" fees. This applies ESPECIALLY for any collegiate riders" *

* You don't need a USCF or NORBA license to race multi sport, that's USAT (contact Sparky for that info). Confusing I know. Only register for USAC if you are looking to do BIKE ONLY events. *

If you have any problems, please contact me, and I can try to help, or contact our USAC rep, or Sparky for USAT questions.

Rubber side down,
Shawn F. Johnson
sfjohnson@centralpennracing.org

19 January 2006 Meeting Points

1. Uniform designs are essentially done. The list of possible suppliers has been reduced to two, Verge and Pactimo.  Expect some sort of sizing samples within the next several weeks and arrival of the finished product sometime in April or May. The design was circulated at the meeting and will be distributed via e-mail or this site soon.

2. Those who are interested in USCF cycling racing this season should contact Shawn Johnson at sfj102@psu.edu for the club's USCF number. (A name change from "The Bicycle Shop" to "Central Penn Racing" is still in process, but the club number should remain the same.)

3. At least two events this summer seem like good candidates for our club's community outreach mission: the MS 150 cycling tour and the Pedal, Splash, and Dash Youth Triathlon in State College. The MS 150 is a charity ride, which will probably need volunteers for aid stations and the like. It will be held July 22-23 this year. Their Web site is at www.nationalmssociety.org/MSBike-Pennsylvania.asp (look for the Keystone Country Ride). The Pedal, Splash, and Dash Youth Triathlon will be held July 29 in State College. Again, they will probably need volunteers. Their event is listed on our Upcoming Races calendar. Please keep both of these events in mind. We'll probably start asking for volunteers to sign up at the next club meeting.

4. There was strong interest at the meeting in fielding relay teams at local triathlons. One local race that has been friendly to relays in the past is the Hollidaysburg Triathlon. Other suggestions - via the e-mail list - are always welcome.

5. The location for the February 16 meeting will be announced via the e-mail list and this site soon. We're trying to secure a restaurant sponsor, which would let us have dinner meetings - with the meal on the club tab.

15 December 2005 Meeting Points

CPR welcomes the addition of the cycling team from The Bicycle Shop to our group. The merger of their group into ours means more sponsors and more club members, and it should allow for official "team" status at USCF cycling races in the coming seasons. Expect more information on this soon, especially involving the final creation of updated team uniforms. Updates will be posted on this site or sent via the group e-mail list.

Special thanks to all those who were able to attend the meeting during the sleet storm, and Happy Holidays to everyone.

17 November 2005 Meeting Points

December's meeting will be replaced by dinner out at Faccia Luna, 1229 S. Atherton Street, State College. We can discuss any off-season training and club business over good Italian food and drink. The time will still be the usual 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15. If you plan to attend, please e-mail Sparky at centriclub@yahoo.com the week before the meeting (so we know how many people to expect at the restaurant).

20 October 2005 Meeting Points

One main point from the meeting: Group indoor trainer rides will resume the first Tuesday in November. Indoor trainer rides will be held at B&E at 6 p.m. each Tuesday. Please bring your own bike and trainer. (Cycling films on VHS or DVD are welcome as inspiration.)

18 August 2005 Meeting Points

1. Beginner rides
2. Advance Notice on Ride Time Change

1. Starting the first Saturday after Labor Day (Saturday, Sept. 10, for those of you who don't like fiddling with your calendars), there will be a beginner-oriented short ride on Saturday mornings. The plan is to have one or two experienced riders lead new cyclists on some short local loops. This goes with the long-term club goal of making endurance sports more accessible.

2. Also after Labor Day, the Monday and Wednesday rides will move to 5:30 p.m. - from the current 6 p.m. - to work around the shortening days. When fall inevitably strikes down on us, the group indoor trainer rides will resume.

21 July 2005 Meeting Points

1. USAT Update
2. Social Events
3. Race Results

1. USAT now lists us as an official club. We send them an updated club roster quarterly; the next update will be sent in mid September. Dues-paying CPR club members renewing their individual USAT memberships after that point should receive a $3 discount. (Note: You will have to send in the paper renewal form to USAT to receive the discount. They can't process club discounts through their online renewal.)

2. Anyone doing the Tadpole Time Trial on July 28 is welcome to join in a cool-down ride to the Creamery on the Penn State campus. Hanging out with other tired cyclists will be free, but the iced cream will be your responsibility. More social outings should be coming soon.

3. I know many of you have been racing very well this season, but only a few people have sent me race results to post. Let's show the racing world what we've been doing. Send results (or links to them) to centriclub@yahoo.com.

16 June 2005 Meeting Points

The major announcement from the meeting: the paperwork has been submitted with USA Triathlon to officially register our club. This will allow us to compete in the regional club standings, and it should (eventually) mean a discount on each member's individual USAT yearly registration. Expect updates as we hear back from USAT.

19 May 2005 Meeting Points

1. Expect announcements soon for social group rides - to be followed by potluck-style dinners. Ideally, these fun events would happen every other week, culminating in an end-of-the-year barbecue.

2. Uniform designs are in their final stages. (Really, I mean it this time.)

3. Sunday road rides leave B&E at 11:30 a.m.

4. Please see the lower portion of our Contact page for instructions on joining the group e-mail list-serve. You will then be able to send an e-mail to everyone in the group simply by sending to one address. This should be an effective way to send information about workouts, travel, etc.

Uniform Announcement - 23 April 2005:

To see proposed club logo designs, which would be used for our club uniforms, please click HERE. Please respond to Sparky with your choice.

21 April 2005 Meeting Points

1. The second annual Tadpole Time Trial series begins Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m. This is a ten-mile cycling individual time trial. The start/finish line is on Tadpole Road, near the intersection of Whitehall and Tadpole Roads. (Go west on College Avenue, turn right on Whitehall Road, and follow that for several miles through farm land to the second four-way intersection, which will be Tadpole. Turn right on Tadpole.) For the first time trial, Jill will be leading a group warm-up ride from Rec Hall on campus at 5 p.m. Please click here for last year's results.

2. Monthly club meetings will move to 8 p.m. for the summer months to give us all more evening training time. This begins with the May 19 meeting.

3. Sunday bike rides will leave B&E at 11 a.m. beginning May 1.

4. Uniform designs are in their final revisions and will soon be sent to Voler. Uniforms will likely be done by mid summer. Please watch for further announcements about uniforms here or on our homepage.

17 March 2005 Meeting Points

1. We will be ordering club uniforms next Thursday, March 24. If you would like to order a club uniform, please come to B&E Cycles for the 6:30 p.m. trainer ride to order. Designs, prices, and other options will be presented Thursday.

2. Saturday morning group rides will begin March 26 at 9 a.m. from B&E Cycles. Expect weekday group rides to follow as the weather improves.

3. USAT's Mid-Atlantic Regional club championships will be held July, 9 in Perryville, Md. Please see www.lin-mark.com for details. This would be a great opportunity to get noticed as a club.

4. The monthly Tadpole Time Trials will begin April 28. These ten-mile time-trials will be held the last Thursday of each month through the warm season. See the Results & Photos page for information about last year's series.

5. If you would like to receive club e-mails, please see the instructions on our Contact page on how to join the club's list-serv. Note: If you are already on the list but do not seem to be receiving messages (there was an announcement sent out earlier this week about tonight's meeting, for example), please check your e-mail service's spam/junk filters. They may be blocking messages from the list. Please contact Sparky with any questions.

An Open Letter to Current and Prospective Members

Athletes:

This club was originally called CenTri, but the name has changed to Central Pennsylvania Racing (CPR). You're on our new club Web site. This site is ad-free, thanks in part to our sponsors.

I say "in part" because sponsorship will only cover some of the costs associated with taking this club out of its infancy and making it a strong local institution. To help control costs, for big things like club uniforms and small things like refreshments at club meetings, we will begin at the next meeting (March 17) to ask for small, monetary, membership dues. Dues would also go into a general club fund in case of new costs (like speaker fees or facility-use fees).

Dues will follow a simple structure:
$25 per year base rate,
$35 per year family rate,
$15 per year college student rate, or
$10 per year high-school student rate.

The idea behind this graduated structure is that those who are least able to pay should pay the least. To come to group workouts or meetings once or twice -- to check us out before joining -- would still be free. Nobody wants a bouncer outside the door to turn away those who haven't paid.

Club member Anthony DiNallo, who has already been actively recruiting sponsors in the business community, will act as a sort of club treasurer in collecting dues and handling club funds.

Ideally, we would like as many club members as possible to attend the next club meeting -- 6:30 p.m. on March 17 at B&E Cycles -- to hear about the plans that a few motivated members have for making CPR a stronger club.

Happy Training.

Sincerely,
Sparky Ion
CPRacing Webmaster
centriclub@yahoo.com

17 February 2005 Meeting Points

1. Club member Anthony DiNallo has approached several local businesses and already found over $1,000 in likely sponsorships. These sponsors would be featured on our uniforms (see below) and a new Web site. In exchange, their support would help defray uniform, speaker, and other costs.

2. A proposal from Anthony DiNallo and Mark Dontigny would change the club's name from CenTri to Central Pennsylvania Racing (CPR). Among members present at the meeting, the consensus was affirmative. If you have any comments on the issue, please contact Anthony@hartmangroup1.com or mdontigny@adelphia.net.

3. Uniforms, complete with sponsors, should be ordered by late spring. The sponsors will defray a part of the cost of uniforms -- for those who choose to purchase them. There was talk of having a couple of major options in uniforms: a) triathlon racing suit and b) cycling clothes for training and cycling racing. Both would have club name and sponsor logos.

4. In line with gaining sponsors and doing races in uniforms, the club would begin asking for minimal annual dues. The proposed dues:
$25 per year base rate, or
$35 per year family rate, or
$15 per year college student rate, or
$10 per year high-school student rate.

5. Mark is approaching USA Cycling, and Anthony approaching USAT, about securing official recognition and licensing for our club. That way we could compete in certain sanctioned events as a team. (This is also a reason for the proposed dues.)

20 January 2005 Meeting Points

Many thanks to Peak Performance Consultant Brad Williams, M.S. for a helpful discussion on effective goal-setting. Williams plans to return next meeting, set for Feb. 17, to continue his series of free talks in the field of sports psychology.

You can call Williams at (570) 748-1859 if you would like to ask about hiring him to consult you personally.

On an unrelated note, Sparky is always looking to update the Web site, especially the Upcoming Races section. Please e-mail suggestions to centriclub@yahoo.com.

16 December 2004 Meeting Points

1. Thanks to sports psychologist Brad Williams, who has agreed to give a series of talks to CenTri. The first talk will be on effective goal setting, and it is scheduled for our next monthly meeting on Jan. 20, 2005. Feel free to invite local athletes to this (or any other) CenTri function.

2. I know I said this last month, but expect a winter training outline from Erik very soon. It will be in the "Articles" section of this site when it's done.

3. No word from L.G. on uniforms yet. Erik will be contacting them again within the next couple days. Updates on uniforms will be e-mailed to the club as they become available.

Happy Holidays.

18 November 2004 Meeting Points

1. Membership in CenTri is Free. Only those wishing to participate in any event with costs to the club (like facility rental), or any equipment purchase, will be asked to pay. We want to be a resource to help you help each other.

2. The following are some group workouts:

  • Saturday morning runs will leave from B&E at 9 a.m. There will be a run Nov. 20 but not the following week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Runs also leave from Erik's home, 230 Madison Street, State College, at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.
  • Group indoor trainer rides will be held at B&E Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., starting Dec. 2
  • Todd swims at the YMCA, starting between 5:30 and 6 a.m. If you would like to join him, contact him at todd.farrell@att.net

3. We will be contacting several possible speakers for group meetings. Todd has spoken to a sports psychologist about coming in to talk to us, perhaps next meeting.

4. A winter training outline from Erik should be posted in the Articles section of the site soon.

5. Erik has contacted clothing manufacturer Louis Garneau about club uniforms. Updates will be sent as they become available.

6. Club meetings will be held the third Thursday of each month at B&E Cycles, 1510 Martin Street, State College, unless otherwise announced.
